How Douglas Coupland’s Polaroids from the Dead continues to be a touchstone 20 years later

When Polaroids from the Dead was published in mid-1996, it was considered a departure for Douglas Coupland. In retrospect, this seems an odd sentiment: Coupland has, after all, made a career of constant changes in direction, shifting from fiction to non-fiction, from novels to photo-illustrated souvenirs, from adult writing to a book for children. Hell, it was Coupland who delivered his Massey Lectures as a novel – an echo of the time he accepted an advance to write a non-fiction guide to life in the post-Boomer demographic, and instead delivered Generation X.
